Purples bounce back after last week’s loss, 42-14
After last week’s loss to in town rival South Warren, the Bowling Green Purples were looking to bounce back as they went on to face another inner city school, the Greenwood Gators. Coming into the game, the defending 5A state champs were a heavy favorite over the 5-4 Gators on their senior night. In the first quarter, Greenwood struck first as they marched the ball down the field resulting in a 25 yard rush TD by junior quarterback Levi Wyatt. The Gators would kickoff to Purples Trevy Barber who received the ball at their own 15 and would take it down to the Gators 7 yard line. That would setup Bowling Green for a rushing touchdown by senior Jayden Axson. The next scoring play wouldn’t come until under 5 minutes left in the second quarter where senior quarterback Deuce Bailey would toss it up to Trevy Barber for a 29 yard touchdown giving the Purples a 14-7 lead. Just under 3 minutes left, Bowling Green would score again as running back Jaxen Smith took it into the end zone from 29 yards out as they extended the lead 21-7 before the half. The next scoring play would be under six minutes in the third quarter. Bowling Green’s Smith would score on a shovel pass from 11 yards out by Bailey making the lead larger 28-7. The Purples would put more points on the board before the third ended as Deuce Bailey connected with Trevy Barber for a second time from four yards out extending the lead 35-7. Bowling Green would go on to score one more time in the fourth as well as Greenwood making the final score 42-14. Bowling Green would go to 7-2 on the year and will have a heavy task ahead of them as they will go on the road to face 6A powerhouse St. Xavier High School.
